Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 buildings located in the heart of Manhattan between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Its most prominent skyscraper, today called the Comcast Building (formerly the GE Building), was built in 1930 with 70 floors and a height of 200 meters.
What is Top of the Rock?
The Top of the Rock is one of New York City’s observation decks from which you get a stunning view of the city (including a great view of the Empire State Building and many other iconic landmarks). It’s bigger and less crowded than the Empire State Building, and you can take great photos thanks to the large glass panels that surround the space!
Where is Top of the Rock located?
The GE Building was completed in 1933 as part of Rockefeller Center. Renowned Art Deco architect Raymond Hood led Rockefeller’s team of architects. The GE Building is one of the most famous and recognized skyscrapers in New York. The observation deck at the top of the Top of the Rock skyscraper reopened to the public on November 1, 2005, after a $75 million renovation. It has been closed since 1986 to accommodate The Rainbow Deck, which was built to resemble the deck of an ocean liner and offer visitors a panoramic view of the city. It was also built to rival the Empire State Building’s 86th floor observatory and today is widely regarded as the skyscraper with the best view in New York.
How tall is Top of the Rock?
Top of the Rock is considered one of the best observation decks in New York. You can go out to the observation deck on both the 67th (250m) and 68th (256m) floors. The large glass panels allow you to have an unobstructed view of the beautiful Manhattan below you. You can also go up a few more floors to the 70th (259m), from where you can see the lower observation decks right below you.

The observatory operates under normal weather conditions. However, during adverse or extreme weather conditions, the observatory may close. If Top of the Rock or a section of Top of the Rock is closed due to severe weather, staff members are available to provide assistance and information. Hours of operation remain the same on all days: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.

As you enter the building you’ll be greeted by a Swarovski crystal chandelier spanning three floors, so you’ll know right away that something is in store for you.
The elevators have a glass roof and travel at a speed of 366 meters per minute to the top, where you reach in just 42 seconds.
Enjoy unobstructed views from the 67th and 69th floors and the 70th floor outdoor deck. The 70th floor has no glass or metal enclosures, making it perfect for photos.

After going through security, head through the mezzanine, filled with interesting information about Rockefeller Center, including photos and artifacts. Here you will learn all about John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and the creation of Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock.
The one-of-a-kind Radiance Wall was created by Swarovski and consists of stunning glass panels, blown glass, crystal clusters and fiber optic lighting.
The 67th and 69th floors are also suitable for interior photos, behind the huge glass windows.
Amenities and more
Restrooms are available at Top of the Rock and are located on the mezzanine level prior to the elevator ascent to the top and on the 66th floor observation deck.
There is no time limit on how long visitors can stay on the observation decks during operating hours. The average length of stay is approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
Food is prohibited at the top. You can bring water in a non-glass bottle.
The main entrance to Top of the Rock is on 50th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Look for the large red carpet marking the entrance on the south side of the road.
